Considered the oldest team sport in the world, Polo is very interesting for anyone who knows how to appreciate it. In today’s post we will tell you the minimum and necessary for a professional polo match to be held.
Field: it must be between 230 and 270 meters long, and between 130 and 145 meters wide (the size of about five soccer fields). It must be made of grass and has two arches, made up of two wicker posts, located 7.3 meters apart.
Players: two teams of four players each mounted on horseback. Number 1 is the attacker, number 2 is the offensive midfielder, and number 3 and 4 is the defensive pivot or back.
Horses: the Polo Argentino breed is a cross of mestizo horses with thoroughbred race horses. The main characteristics of these horses are their speed (they can run at 6o kilometers per hour), agility and docility. They have an average height of 1.60 meters.
Referees: two referees mounted on horseback and a third (thirdman) who always remains out of the field of play. It only intervenes in case of disagreement regarding a ruling.
